While there are many superlative ways to describe David Burke Townhouse, I am surprised at how lackluster one of their signature entrees tasted. David Burke Townhouse, known for its creative menu and exceptionally unique presentation, is located in one of the most beautiful and aesthetically pleasing dining rooms. In addition, the mood and feel of the restaurant is incredibly festive, having already decorated the interior and entry foyer with Christmas inspired ornamentation. Having dined at David Burke several times (including David Burke Primehouse in Chicago) I had always embodied positive reflection and profound admiration for his unique and creative cuisine, presentation and execution. However, despite being accustom to positive meals in the past, I can not help but articulate my disappointment towards the lackluster dish I most recently experienced. I went with the Crispy Confit Chicken Leg ($23) that was served with a “warm faro trail mix” side. As evidenced by the picture above, the dish’s presentation is clearly aesthetically attractive, something David Burke has garnered tremendous praise and fame for over the years. However, judging a book by its cover can sometimes be deceiving. The chicken was a bit bland, lacking a necessary zest that would have improved the minimal flavor. While the dish integrated a cranberry like sauce, it did not suffice. What was most disappointing was the misleading title that suggested it was “crispy.” I was expecting a crispy, delectable skin, akin to what I experienced with Morso’s Pheasant Breast dish. However, the skin was barely crispy, lacking the essential texture that I had become accustom to with other comparable dishes. To make matters worse, the “warm faro trail mix” side was a poor choice and in many ways undermined the dish. Although I understand the context, as DB can justify the trail mix because of the holiday season, the dish would have been improved had it added a more lively side, such as sweet potato or winter green. At the end of the day, while you can not judge a restaurant by one dish, it was nevertheless disappointing considering the high expectations David Burke has justifiably gained over the years.
