The Art of the Luxury Dining Deals in NYC

While New York City is one of the most expensive cities in the world, there are many opportunities to take advantage of dining at some of New York’s finest restaurants at a fraction of the normal price. Contrary to what most would assume, the finest restaurants, including Le Bernardin, Philippe and Milos serve special menus and prix fixes, for lunch and dinner that justify another reason to dine out in addition to the praiseworthy food. Below is a list of some of the best promotions and deals in NYC

Industry Night at Osteria Morini

Osteria Morini is Chef Michael White’s popular Italian SoHo eatery that serves the Emilia-Romagna (Bologna) region of Italian cuisine. In addition to auspicious antipasta’s, Osteria Morini is best known for its sumptuous pasta’s. What most are not aware is that every Monday after 9PM, Osteria Morini hosts “Industry Night” and the restaurant serves each pasta for only $10, a fraction of the average $23 per pasta. While nearly every pasta is noteworthy, the Torcia (Squid Ink with Shrimp and Seppia Ragu), Spaghetti Alla Vongole (Clams, Leeks, White Wine, Chile), Tagliatelle (Ragu Antica, Parmigiano), Garganelli (Pasta Quills, Cream, Radicchio, Truffle Butter, Prosciutto) and Gramigna (Macaroni, Pork Sausage, Tomato, Cream) are all excellent. The pastas at Osteria are on the same level as the best pastas in New York, including Babbo, Cipriani and Il Buco so considering the deal, there is nothing comparable.

City Harvest Lunch at Le Bernardin

Widely considered the best restaurant in New York City, along with Eleven Madison Park and Per Se, Eric Ripert’s Le Bernardin is one of the most revered restaurants in the world. While the Chef Tasting Menu is $175 per person and Prix Fixe is $125, most are probably not aware of Le Bernardin’s daily City Harvest Lunch Prix Fixe for only $45 per person. Serving three savory courses, the City Harvest Lunch (which donates $5 to the honorable charity) is the best way to experience the exceptional seafood restaurant for a fraction of the price. The Prix Fixe serves choice of Potato Leek Soup or Striped Bass as a starter, Skate or Salmon as an entree and Black Forest  or selection of ice cream/sorbet for dessert. Overall, one of the best “values” for luxury dining in Manhattan.

Three Course Lunch Special at Philippe

Since 2005, Philippe has been a favorite amongst fans of Mr. Chow and residents of the UES, who crave the exceptionally crafted Chinese cuisine. While the menu is essentially an exact replica of its predecessor, Mr. Chow, its less formal atmosphere and vibe differentiates it from its competition. Although Philippe is known as much for its prohibitive menu as its food, most are probably unaware of their daily three course lunch special for a reasonable $20 per person. Offering a variety of its most popular dishes including Chicken Satay or Squab Lettuce Wraps as starters and Beijing Chicken, Crispy Beef or Salmon for entree (with a side of rice), choice of dessert and coffee/tea for only $20, Philippe’s lunch special is not only perhaps the best luxury dining deal in town, it may be one of the best values for lunch in NYC.

Three Course Lunch Prix Fixe at Milos

Esiatoria Milos is not only the best Greek restaurant in New York, but it also is one of the best restaurants in the city. Offering one of the best business lunch “scenes” in Manhattan, perfectly placed on West 55th Street, Milos’ food speaks for itself and thus, justifies a visit via its superb cuisine and excellent atmosphere. Nevertheless, Milos offers a very affordable, three course prix fixe lunch for only $25 per person. Serving some of the freshest fish on the east coast, Milos serves some of its finest dishes, including: Canadian Sea Scallops, Mediterranean Meze Plate and Tomato Salad as first courses and choice of Honjake Salmon, Shrimp Saganaki, Chicken Brochette and the most popular, Loup de Mar fish from Kephalonia in Greece as the entrees. While $25 is not a bargain for lunch, the price point is a fraction of the cost of what ordering a la carte for lunch or dinner (which can easily exceed $100 per person).

10 Cent Wing Night at Croxley and Ales

Although there are a plethora of sports bar in Manhattan, the majority are overrated and lackluster. On the one hand NYC has the upscale sports bar, such as The Windsor or The Ainsworth that charges restaurant prices for average food, nightclub prices for drinks and caters to a crowd comprised of mostly guys you would have met at a big 10 school. On the other, you have the inexpensive “frat house vibe” Down The Hatch and Three Sheets style sports bar that is loud, obnoxious and offers cheap food and drinks that don’t warrant a visit. So one may ask where to find a cool, hip, sports bar that serves good food, great drinks in a above average setting (especially for the games) at reasonable prices? Go to Croxley Ales in the East Village. In addition to 33 beers on tap, Croxley Ales serves above average food and on Sundays and Mondays (for NFL games), serves 10 cent boneless wings and 20 cent wings. That’s right. In addition, Croxley serves delectable flavors such as Korean BBQ, Thai Peanut and Red Hot Chilli (although it was too hot for my tongue) among all the normal favorites.
